I dye yarn in micro batches, that is about 6 fathoms at a time. Although I use the same colours each time, the result is a little different. That's the charm of hand-dyed yarn. I therefore recommend that you always buy enough yarn for your project right away. Alternatively, you can alternate knitting between two purls every other or every fourth row. Then the difference is evened out a bit.
